Accreditation Handbook—Chapter XIV: Standards Development and Implementation

Revised Standards for Accreditation – effective January 1, 2023

The CAA approved revisions to the Standards for Accreditation that will go into effect on January 1, 2023. The CAA appreciates the feedback provided during the two rounds of peer review for the proposed edits to standards during 2020–2021. The CAA reviewed all comments and suggestions and approved final edits at its meetings in February and July 2021. View the side-by-side comparison [PDF] to see the changes.

The CAA approved revisions to the following standards:

  • 1.1 Institutional Accreditation
  • 1.9 Public Information
  • 3.1A Audiology Curriculum, including streamlining the Professional Practice Competencies
  • 3.1B Speech-Language Pathology Curriculum, including streamlining the Professional Practice Competencies
  • 3.4A/3.4B Diversity Reflected in the Curriculum
  • 3.8A/3.8B Clinical Education-Client Welfare
  • 5.2 Program Assessment of Students
  • 5.7 Employment Rate
  • 5.8 Analysis of Student Outcome Measures

All revisions will be reflected in forms and materials and will be released as soon as they are available.  Programs filing accreditation applications beginning Summer 2022 must complete and submit the updated Knowledge and Skills within the Curriculum charts for audiology [DOCX] or speech-language pathology [DOCX].

Programs are expected to continue to comply with all standards currently in effect through December 31, 2022.

Resources

The CAA developed resources to support programs during the transition.

CAA and Accreditation Staff also will be addressing questions in a special series of webchats.

When Will CAA Review My Program Under 2023 Standards Revisions?

All reports and applications submitted after January 1, 2023 must address the revisions in standards. In 2022, programs can expect to have the CAA ask for information about how they (will) comply with the revisions, as noted in the table below. The CAA will apply these revisions to its decisions in 2023.
